The Fairmont Empress Hotel at 721 Government Street in downtown Victoria is well known for its afternoon tea, but the real treasure there is the Empress Room. The dining room is opulent and formal, befitting such a regal hotel, and the cuisine exceptional. We also love the Bengal Lounge for delicious Indian fare. Phone (250) 384-8111.

  • Gelinas Carr Furniture

We discovered some of Joseph Gelinas and Sandra Carr's work  when we first dined at Stone Soup Inn (located on the way to lake Cowichan). Chef/owner Brock Windsor has beautiful maple table tops by  Gelinas Carr. We commissioned them to do the bartops and cabinetry in our wine shop renovation and what beautiful work they did sourcing gorgeous local wood and crafting the finest solid wood maple and arbutus bar tops I have ever seen! They welcome people to their showroom/workshop on the outskirts of Duncan. Call ahead to made sure they are around.

  • Harrison Glass Art

We first met Terry and John Harrison in the early '90's when they owned the florist shop in Duncan and were customers, regularly purchasing our Madeleine Sylvaner. Terry is passionate about all of her artistic endeavours. If it is a flower, Terry will paint it onto glass, onto clothing, onto table linens and tiles. Wild flowers, cultivated garden flowers and even weeds in bloom are subjects for her work. It is terry who decorates our special "Wildflower Collection" bottles, which we fill with our ancient method balsamic vinegar.

All the glass plates, wine glasses, vases, jugs and dinnerware are fired so that they can go into the dishwasher and all the clothing and linens are machine wash-and-dry.

Her background prior to glass and fabric painting includes painting in watercolours, a career in journalism, floristry, sheep farming, dog breeding, and a musical life that continues today in voice, flute and harp.

  • Hotel Rialto

Hotel Rialto at 653 Pandora Ave. Victoria (on the corner of Douglas) reopened in June 2009 as a boutique style hotel in a beautifully restored heritage building originally built by Chinese merchant Lim Bang in 1912. A massive renovation restored the hotel to its original grandeur and beyond. Upon entering the hotel lobby guests are greeted with sprawling Italian marble floors, exotic hardwood and fresco walls. The décor is "Old World Italian with hints of Chinese influence" paying respect to Mr. Bang. (250) 383-4157
